§ 3.07.74. Establishment of commission.

  • (A)

    There is hereby created and established a commission to be known as the Athens City Environment and Sustainability Commission consisting of 11 members, nine to be appointed by Athens City Council of which at least six members shall be residents of the city and three members may reside outside the corporate limits, and one shall be an Ohio University student; one member shall be a representative of Athens City Council; and one member shall be a representative of the mayor of Athens. The mayor's representative will serve at the pleasure of the mayor.

    (B)

    Appointed members will serve a term of three years with initial appointments of two appointed members serving three years, two serving two years, and one serving one year. After the initial appointments all members shall be appointed for three-year terms. Members may be considered for reappointment and may serve consecutive three-year terms. Vacancies on the commission occurring otherwise than by the expiration of terms shall be filled for the unexpired term of the person being replaced. All members shall serve without compensation.

    A member who misses three consecutive meetings without an excused absence shall automatically cease to be a member and his/her seat shall become vacant.

    (C)

    All meetings are open to the public in accordance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations.

    The commission shall elect its own chairperson from among its members, shall maintain a record of its proceedings, and shall adopt such rules and regulations of self-government as may be necessary to carry out the purposes and provisions of this section.
