§ 3.07.75. Purpose.

  • (A)

    The purpose of the environment and sustainability commission is to promote and foster an awareness of environmental and sustainability issues in the community, safeguard the consideration of environmental quality through community programs, provide information on the environment and sustainability to the community, and to advise and recommend to city council and the city administration policies and programs which will protect the environment and promote sustainability in the City of Athens.

    (B)

    In order to achieve its purpose, the environmental commission may:

    (1)

    Receive citizens' inquiries on environmental concerns, issues and problems and make recommendations to council on resolution of those issues and concerns.

    (2)

    Investigate, develop and recommend for council's consideration policies, legislation and programs which protect, enhance or maintain the environmental quality and sustainability of the community.

    (3)

    Develop and recommend for council's consideration revenue sources for funding the implementation of programs which protect, enhance or maintain the environmental quality of the community.

    (4)

    Conduct meetings for the discussion and resolution of issues and concerns which may impact the environmental quality of the community.

    (5)

    Develop and recommend to council environmental standards for evaluating the impact of future growth and development of the city.

    (6)

    Conduct studies and develop plans and recommend adoption of such studies and plans by council and the city administration.

    (C)

    The commission shall report, at least annually, on its activities and recommendations regarding policies which promote behavior that allows the community to meet present needs without wasting resources and compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
